Seven Instant Self-Confidence Boosters

As you are studying to build your self-confidence, it's helpful to have some quick and easy things you can do to help give yourself an instant boost. 

1. Smile - This isn't just a superficial way to make yourself feel better, smiling surely does make you feel better. Smiling releases what I call "the happy chemicals" -endorphins and serotonin - the chemicals that give you a natural high.

2. Square Those Shoulders - When you are feeling down or insecure, your shoulders slump, you look downward and your whole posture suggests defeat. Try this when you feel your body slumping: Sit in a chair and bend at the waist so that your head is between your knees and your arms hang at your sides.  Now slowly, raise your body up by curling your spine upwards one vertebrae at a time. Once you are sitting up, role your shoulders back so that your posture is erect. Hold your head high and put a smile on your face. You've now given new input to the brain which gives you a feeling of well-being. Repeat as often as needed. 

3. Get absorbing - practice is one of the best ways to raise endorphin levels that gives us a natural high. When you need a lift, get up and take a brisk walk. Even if you can't go outdoors, take a walk colse to your building. If you're at home, put on some music and march in place or dance. Doing wall push-ups is another great way to promptly give you a lift. Stand arms length from a wall, place your palms on the wall and do a vertical push-up touching your nose to the wall before pulling back. Repeat at least ten times. The deep muscle pressure of the practice will signal the brain to issue the feel good chemicals. 

4. Hit the Delete Button - Whenever you get a negative thought, immediately picture yourself hitting a giant delete button. Get rid of that thought. If you can, replace it with a definite opinion about yourself. Use what ever visual aid you like to see yourself getting rid of that thought. 

5. Acknowledge Yourself - Acknowledgment is not a compliment, it is a behavioral description. An example would be telling yourself: "Good job - you asserted yourself and got the corollary you wanted." Or: "You didn't surely want to but you made that call." 

6. Model the trust You See in Others - Whenever you need to summon up some instant self-confidence, fantasize the most definite person you know. How do they walk and talk? How do they carry themselves? Now model yourself after them and duplicate their behaviors in your own actions. 

7. Do Something You Have Been Putting Off - Nothing gives us a boost best than taking action. If you have been procrastinating on some things, set a timer and challenge yourself to get straight through them as speedily as you can. Then once they are done, reply and reward yourself.
