Marc Twain once said, "There are several good protections against temptation, but the surest is cowardice."
Knowing our own limitations is prominent to everybody on the road to stopping smoking.
Do It Yourself
That said, we must also be willing to sail close to our boundaries in order to stretch and change. I guess what I am saying here is this, if we stay safe we will never expand, and likewise if we strengthen too much too soon we may crash and burn.
Knowing where you're safe and where you're at risk is renowned on the road to stopping smoking. So lets talk about temptations and how they can be your many allies.
So you've stopped smoking and start to tell yourself that you must stop hanging out with population who still smoke because you don't want to be exposed to the temptation Wrong! of procedure you want to be exposed otherwise you are living in cotton wool land and denying the reality that you are tempted. The whole point of giving up is not to protect yourself from temptation but to beat temptation.
Some of the many fighting professionals spend hours watching footage of their opponents, why? Because they want to face them squarely in the ring. Ask yourself, why would they go into the ring blind, not knowing what to expect.
The same applies to stopping smoking, by exposing yourself to the temptation gives you the occasion to know your own reactions. I must stress here that this differs for everybody and there is no hard and fast rule. Some of you may pick to go out with smoker friends and casually whiff the odd plume of smoke to remind yourself. And if you do, slowly tell yourself how pleasant it is to plainly smell the smoke instead of burning your throat and pocket with its noxious fumes. The truth is that it all the time smells good than it tastes.
You may pick to go straight through the motions of buying a packet, occasion the cellophane and peeling back the foil to take in the sweet smell of tobacco, then close the packet up and hand it to one of your friends.
All this may seem too much for you, so take your time and calibrate what you can and can't take as you slowly push your ease zone. Inner convert will happen if you convert your behaviour...that's a given.
To summarize, face your temptations and know your limits as you slowly and actively push towards exposing yourself to any experience that would have regularly impulsed you to smoke back then when you where a smoker. You could make a list of environments and situations that you would light up. Score them in terms of difficulty to deal with and then cross them off as you systematically expose yourself and conquer the temptations, One by One.
Cowardice is not an option!
